How to protect your Chip and PIN

It’s essential that you keep your PIN secret and never tell anyone what it is.

  • Don’t write it down
  • Don’t give it to anyone, especially if they offer to enter it for you
  • Enter your PIN discreetly, just as you would when you’re using a cash machine. If you’re given a hand-held PIN terminal, move to a position where you won’t be overlooked
  • You can only use your PIN at a cash machine or a PIN terminal
  • Never tell anyone your PIN when you’re ordering by phone, mail order or online
  • Always keep your receipt and check it against your statement.

I can never remember my PIN

You can change your PIN to the number of your choice at almost any Barclays cash machine in the UK. Just make sure that it’s easy to remember, but hard for someone else to guess – so don’t choose your birthday, or your address, or anything else that’s obvious.
