Shopping and banking online is a marvellous invention. Unfortunately, thieves think so too. Internet fraud- whereby criminals intercept customers' online transactions to obtain their credit card or bank details – is a serious concern.

So we've taken steps to put your mind at rest.

Barclaycard Secure- extra safety online

Barclaycard Secure uses the latest technology from "Verified by Visa" and "MasterCard SecureCode" to protect your card against unauthorised use when you shop online at participating retailers. And when you use your debit card on the Barclaycard website to pay your credit card bill, you'll pass through the Verified by Visa system.

How does it work?

You're probably already familiar with Chip and PIN idea, the new payment method whereby instead of signing a receipt, you tap a secret four-digit number into a keypad. This service works on the same principle:

• You choose a password for your card that’ll be known only to you and your card issuer
• Once the password has been verified (this should happen immediately) you’ll be able to go ahead and make your payment
• When you next make an online purchase with a participating dealer, you'll be asked to enter this password during the secure sales process
• Your transaction will be authorised immediately

This service is completely free and you can register online now. Just follow the links below:

• VISA card holders
• MasterCard holders

When will it affect me?

If you haven't already registered, sometimes participating retailers will ask you if you'd like to register while you are making an online purchase. If you have registered already, you’ll be asked for your password.

This is usually completely safe. However, it's a good idea to check that they are a member of the "Verified by Visa" or "MasterCard SecureCode" schemes before you go ahead.

When you are paying your Barclaycard bill online at the Barclaycard website, we will ask you to register your debit card, or for your password if you are already registered.
