There is a transaction on my account that I have not authorised

You are confident that neither you or any additional cardholder on your account has authorised this transaction, although you may have had dealings with this Retailer in the past. Please read through the checklist below as it may help you.

If this does not allay your concerns please click next at the bottom of the page.

  • Initially, you should contact the Retailer to establish what the charge relates to. Their name can be found on your statement.
  • Check all receipts, including any purchase you may have made over the internet, by mail order, or by telephone (eg; Florist, Catalogue, Ticket Agency or Insurance). If so, you may not have a receipt.
  • You may have a voucher which has the same amount, date and time but shows a different name to that on your statement. This is because companies may use their corporate name and/or address, which can be different from their public name and/or address.
  • The charges could relate to an existing arrangement that you have previously set up with a company for payments which are made monthly, quarterly, annually.
  • Occasionally, Retailers process their vouchers well after the transaction date which could mean the purchase was made some time ago.
  • Have you used your card to withdraw cash, pay a bill, purchase travellers cheques, or foreign currency? If so, this will show as a cash advance with a separate handling fee on your statement.
  • If the transaction relates to a hotel booking

Hotels have the authority to debit your account for any additional charges that were not included in the final bill when you check out of the hotel (eg; mini bar, meals, room damage, telephone charges etc). Hotels will also charge a cancellation fee if you do not keep a reservation. Before approaching Barclaycard please contact the hotel to clarify what the charge relates to.

  • If the transaction relates to a car hire company.

These Retailers have the authority to debit your account for any additional charges that were not included on the final bill when you returned the car (eg; car not returned with a full tank of petrol, damage to the car, speeding fines, parking fines, additional drivers insurance etc). If you presented a pre-paid voucher to the Retailer, please contact them to establish if the value of the pre-paid voucher covered the cost of the car hire. Before approaching Barclaycard please contact the car hire company to clarify what the charges are.
