Credit card fraud costs banks and businesses millions of pounds every year. So Barclaycard is committed to reducing card fraud, working closely with cardholders, businesses and banks to tackle this increasing problem.
This page includes practical tips for cardholders and administrators to help prevent fraud, as well as advice on protecting your cards and shopping safely online.


Practical ways to keep your business credit cards secure

To help minimise the risk and inconvenience of credit card fraud, Barclaycard has developed a number of initiatives to tackle this increasing problem. For instance, when you’re making payments online, Barclaycard Secure offers additional security, with password protection for all transactions.
If you discover that your card has been used fraudulently, we also have measures in place to protect your account, minimise the disruption to your business and get you a replacement card as quickly as possible.

What to do if you suspect fraud

If you see a suspicious or unauthorised transaction on your account, report it immediately. We'll suspend your card, to prevent any further transactions, while we conduct an investigation. We do this to ensure that you never have to pay for transactions you didn't make.
If you’re a card administrator, you may also find the following advice useful:
  • Review statements – if spending patterns seem unusual or increase dramatically, check with the cardholder.
  • Notify us immediately if there are transactions you or a cardholder don't recognise.
  • Regularly review the number of cards your business holds, and be sure to cancel any you don't need.
  • Report any missing cards immediately.

Protect your PIN

How to keep your PIN safe

Now that all cards include a chip, card fraud has reduced because electronic chips are difficult to copy or alter. Together with your unique PIN (personal identification number), the chip in your card provides a more secure way for us to verify that both the card and cardholder are genuine.
It's important to protect your PIN, so you should never tell anyone what it is. For exactly this reason, no bank or card issuer will ever ask you for it.
We've put together these simple tips to help you keep your PIN safe:
  • Don't allow anyone else to use your card. And never tell anyone your PIN, password or other security information.
  • Try to memorise your PIN when you receive it, and destroy the notice you receive with it.
  • If you find it hard to remember your PIN, you can change it at any cash machine to something more memorable.
  • Never write down or record your PIN, password or other security details.
  • Never store your PIN next to your card, because if both are stolen, you may not be covered for fraudulent use.
  • Take extra care at cash machines and when you make payments using chip and PIN. Just shield the keypad as you enter your PIN to ensure no one can see it over your shoulder.
  • Never give your account details or other security information to anyone unless you know who they are and why they need them. We will never request your PIN, and will usually ask for specific letters from your password, rather than the whole password.
  • Keep your card receipts, statements, and other information about your account that contain your business or personal details, safe. When you dispose of them, make sure you do it securely and destroy them first.

Online protection

Advice and protection when you’re shopping online

Online shopping is convenient, easy and mostly safe. But there are more and more scams to watch out for too. To help make shopping online a safer experience, we've put together some tips for our cardholders.

Together with initiatives like Barclaycard Secure, these are designed to help keep your details safe and reduce fraud:
  • Some websites don't have a secure logo or icon, but will display a security message to alert you when you are entering a secure area, so always read these before accepting.
  • Check the website address. Secure areas will always start with https. The 's' stands for secure, meaning any information sent will be encrypted, making it difficult for anyone to view.
  • Secure websites use systems like Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Secure Electronic Transaction (SET). This refers to the way data is transferred between the browser and the database, indicating that it's done securely.
  • If a website gives you an option to use a secure checkout, always say yes.
  • Be sure you know what the delivery and returns policies are before you buy. Will you be expected to pay the postage if you have to make a return? Do the sellers offer refunds if you're not satisfied with the goods when they arrive?
  • Make sure you know what you're signing up for. Are you agreeing to a single one-off payment or a regular (such as monthly) payment?
  • Are you buying from overseas? If so, make sure you know about any taxes and charges up front, as you may incur additional fees for customs.
  • Keep a copy of your order summary either by printing it at the time of sale, or on email. You'll need this to request a refund, or if the goods don't arrive.
  • Always check your bank and credit card statements as soon as you receive them. If you see something you don't think is right, first get in touch with us so we can investigate the transaction and if necessary replace your card.
  • Inspect your goods carefully when they arrive. If you're not satisfied with the quality, or have any other issues, contact the supplier to resolve them. If you're unable to reach a satisfactory resolution with them, contact us and we'll do our best to help.

Whenever you use your business Barclaycard to pay for goods and services in a shop, by phone or online, you are covered by the Barclaycard guarantee. This covers both you and your business for any unauthorised spending on your account provided that:
  • The card is not used fraudulently with either you or an authorised user's knowledge.
  • You or any authorised user have not acted in a negligent way, by giving or allowing anyone access to your account details or PIN, resulting in the card or account details being used fraudulently.
  • You tell us as soon as you become aware that your card or card details have been compromised.

Even more security measures to protect your account

Our dedicated fraud team continually monitors our customers' accounts, highlighting any irregular spending patterns. This means that from time to time we may call you to verify that certain transactions are genuine.
We may also request additional security information to confirm a transaction at the point of sale. These are likely to be infrequent and are important measures in our on-going fraud prevention strategy.
